China Africa Power Conference丨Li Zhenguo: Developing Photovoltaic Industry Will Bring Great Social and Economic Value to African Countries

On November 6, 2019, Global Energy Internet and China Africa Energy Power Conference opened in Beijing National Convention Center. More than 1,000 guests from 79 countries gathered in Beijing to discuss the global and African energy internet development plans and draw up a new blueprint for the world's energy transformation and sustainable development around the two themes of "Global Energy Internet - Green Low Carbon Sustainable Development Road" and "African Energy Internet - New Driving Force for Africa's Development" during the two-day meeting.
Liu Baohua, Deputy Director of the National Energy Administration, Tyra, Secretary-General of the African Power Utility Association, and Sheila, Minister of Energy of Guinea, attended the conference and delivered speeches. Liu Zhenya, Chairman of the Global Energy Internet Development Cooperation Organization, and Moussa, Vice Minister of the Ministry of electricity and Renewable Energy of Egypt, special representative of President Abdel Fattah al Sisi of Egypt, delivered keynote speeches.
This conference attracted more than 30 guests from African countries to China. At the dinner on the evening of June 6, more than 300 distinguished guests, including the heads of energy-related departments of more than ten countries, senior executives of energy and power enterprises, and major leaders of several African regional organizations, gathered to talk about the future of China Africa energy. Li Zhenguo, President of LONGi, delivered a speech as a representative of China's new energy enterprises.
In his speech, Li warmly welcomed heads of energy departments and experts from all countries to visit China to work together for the future of power development in African countries. He said that clean energy had played an increasingly important role in today's world. LONGi firmly believes that photovoltaic plus energy storage will be a future energy solution for human beings and a powerful weapon against climate change.
Li Zhenguo said that in the past decade, the technological progress and cost reduction of photovoltaic technology had been far faster than expected, and the cost of photovoltaic power generation has been greatly reduced. At present, photovoltaic has become the most economical energy type in many regions of the world, and it is believed that this trend will further expand to most regions of the world in 2-3 years. When the photovoltaic power generation is economical enough and fully manufactured with clean energy, desalination and desert irrigation can be carried out through photovoltaic power generation, and large-scale desert greening can be carried out to achieve the carbon emission target. This is also the development concept of "Solar for Solar - Negative Carbon Earth" that LONGi is practicing.
Li also described the huge social and economic value of the photovoltaic industry to African countries. He said that the cost reduction brought about by the progress of photovoltaic technology has made photovoltaic more economical than traditional energy, and the large-scale use of photovoltaic power generation can also avoid environmental problems in economic development, and do not take the old road of pollution before treatment; in addition, the development of clean energy industry can also promote employment and local economic development. Li Zhenguo said that as a promoter of clean energy, LONGi would spare no effort to provide technical support for countries that need to develop clean energy.
President Li Zhenguo's views also reflect the unanimous concerns of all participants at this meeting. At the meeting on June 6, the general assembly sent three appeals to the participants:

  • Grasp the trend of world energy transformation with clean development as the fundamental direction, build a global energy Internet, and form a modern energy system with clean energy production, wide allocation, and electrification of consumption.
  • Strengthen all-round innovation in strategic planning, project implementation, market operation, technology and equipment, and lay a solid foundation for the development of global energy Internet.
  • Gather all forces to push the development of global energy internet to a new level according to the three stages of domestic interconnection, intracontinental interconnection, and global interconnection.
    At the meeting on November 7, Chen Pengfei, General Manager of New Energy Business Department of LONGi, delivered a keynote speech and participated in the dialogue on "electricity popularization, employment, and prosperity" on behalf of LONGi. We had in-depth discussions with the participants on promoting the popularization of electric power, eliminating the population without electricity, promoting industrial development and economic prosperity, and realizing socially sustainable development.
Chen Pengfei said that as of 2017, there are still as many as 840 million people without electricity in the world, 96 countries have not achieved 100% power supply, and African countries are also one of the regions where the population without electricity is relatively concentrated. The high price of electric energy and the lag of infrastructure construction still lead to the main factors of the regions without electricity and the population without electricity.
The economic advantages and easy availability of photovoltaic power generation make it more convenient to deploy in the area away from the microgrid, bringing stable and affordable clean energy. The solution to the problem of power generation can also help these people without electricity enter the information age, eliminate the information gap, and promote local development.
Referring to the experience of building photovoltaic power generation projects in Africa, Chen Pengfei said that the African continent is rich in light resources and has good conditions for developing photovoltaic power generation. At present, LONGi has launched special solutions and built a number of off microgrid photovoltaic projects in combination with a large number of researches in Africa, local climate drought, weak infrastructure, and other characteristics. Through solar power generation, African people will have stable, economical, and clean energy and hope for the future.
